  • Picked up a 2013 DF40A today happy!

Mate Rod and i have gone shares in a tinny that we have to set up for river and estuary fishing and prawning (cast netting for prawns or as you call them, shrimps).

Its an oldie but in great condition alloy 14 footer, V nose punt style. Weve had flat floors and casting decks added, rewired, fitted a bow mount electric trolling motor and rebuilt the trailer suspension. Rod had a Lowrance Global Map GPS and i had a HDS 5 x sounder left over from recent upgrades to the bigger boats so they have now been installed in the tinny to provide the technology platform.

The boat came with a 1995 Johnson 25 hp, which is also in great condition but was a bit slow for us, especially with the extra decks and floors adding quite a bit of weight to the boat.

So i asked my mate Jon who is also our local Zuke dealer to keep an eye out for a good used 40hp for us. The 40 is the max rated hp for the hull.

He called up yesterday to say he was trading in a 40 tiller steer with all options for a long term customer who wanted to upgrade to a 60. He had sold the motor and serviced it since new for this customer so knew it was in excellent condition.

So i went and had a look today, it was truly in mint condition.

240 hours, sold in Sept 2013 and has balance of the Suzuki factory 5 year warranty that is standard here in Aus. Its electric start, PTT, lean burn model, and has the premium tiller arm with LED tacho and warning lights built in, as well as troll mode.

We picked it up for about 60% of the cost of a new one. $4750. New sell for over $8K here. He will install it for us in a week or so, just in time for our planned trip to chase some barramundi in a river a few hours north of here - they are firing there at the moment, ive never caught one so hope to tick it off the bucket list.

So looking forward to giving it a run and seeing how well the little tinny goes with 40 of Mr Suzuki's best horses on the transom.

        Thanks guys!

The BMT we originally picked up from a deceased estate clearance for $1500 all up. Absolute bargain. So that was the starting point for the project.

I wont tell you how much has been spent since then ..... And not counting the value of items we have installed that came from "stock"!!

But some judicious shopping around has also saved heaps - for example i picked up the Watersnake bow mount electric (with wireless remote controls) on sale for $650 as it is last years model. Plus, it doesnt hurt to have friends in the marine business for buying things like deep cycle batteries.

I spent this morning from 8am until about 2:30pm working on the switch panel. The guys that did the welding in of the flat floors also claimed to "know boats" and so they wired up the lights etc and installed a switch panel, but we were very unhappy with the way they had done the panel as it was nowhere near waterproof and they didnt follow our suggested solution, so its been pulled out and started over. But deciphering their wiring arrangement has been a nightmare and they had cut all wires in the switch panel short so ive had to lengthen about a dozen wires.

We are installing the switch panel in a waterproof plastic electrical junction box and the wires enter it via the bottom and side using plastic wiring glands that seal up pretty well. Will then we stick the junction box to the side of the tinny with Sikaflex 291 once we have sorted the wiring out.

Ye only other job to do before we head off in a couple of weeks to try to catch those barramundi is to fit the spare wheel bracket.

I will post more pics once we get the Zuke installed. Should be done in about 10-14 days time as Jon's workshop is flat strap at the moment.

You both have done beautiful work. Looks like a showroom design.
Will wait to see how many fish want to jump in such a fine looking rig.

Great find on the Suzuki Grant.
              Clean as a whistle inside!!
Lesson learnt about welders who dabble in wiring.
              Cheers, Glen.

Its a good boat for the rivers and creeks, weve done a couple of trips now. Just fitted a foil to the cav plate to see if we can get it going a bit better. I think we may need a inch less pitch in the prop, but will test again first with the foil. Gets about 45km/hr at WOT
