Generally when the bulb goes flat, the first area to look at is at the fuel and breather lines and tank connections, because a ball sucking flat indicates that the engine fuel pump is working but not enough fuel is not getting through to it.
So check:
- The tank breather and breather lines. Sometimes a mud wasp makes its nest in the breather outlet and blocks it off. To check the breather line is clear, take the fuel filler cap off and then blow through the breather lines to see if air flows smoothly through.
- check the anti- syphon valve on the tank (if fitted, and they are to most US built boats). They can fail and restrict fuel flow to the engine. It is built into the barb fitting on the tank where the fuel line connects. Remove fuel line, unscrew the barb from the tank. We simply punched out the ball, spring and seat from inside the fitting so that it was then a clear fitting and reinstalled.
- check and possibly replace the fuel lines from the tank to the ball. They can deteriorate internally where you can't see and again, this can block or restrict fuel flow.
