  • suzuki dt 6

I have a Suzuki dt6 2 stroke and I believe its either a 1984 1985 or 1986 model. When I hook everything up it starts up only if I have the choke out or spray starting fluid into the carb but it wont stay running. I've cleaned the carb twice by soaking it in sea foam and them using an air compressor to blow the gunk out the primer bulb stays hard but the it just wont stay running what should I do replace the fuel pump ? if so how much would one cost. any information will be greatly appreciated please.

Did you take the carb apart?
Do you have a service manual for the motor?
I'm not sure how good sea foam is for soaking carbs. It is good for adding to fuel, to help keep carb clean while running. And to prevent fuel from breaking down.
Starting fluid has no oil to lubricate motor, not good to use on 2 stroke motors.

Post back when able with answers to these questions.

Yes I took the carb apart and I read a lot of reviews saying that seafoam was good for soaking carbs I don't have a service manual but I have found a few manuals online that look really close to being the right manual also I had gas hooked up to the motor so it was getting some fuel that had oil in it so I figured it would be OK to use starting fluid if I had the gas mixed with oil hooked up

But if the gas with oil is not getting through carb to run the motor, then you might not be getting oil on the internal parts!

Yes, it is possible that your fuel pump is bad, but check these things listed below.

Is the carb bowl filling up when you pump the bulb? If not, then you still have a problem with fuel getting to bowl. Check the float needle valve, and its adjustment. (If not filling bowl, the carb can not supply fuel to run the motor.) If fuel is getting to bowl, then fuel isn't getting through the jets, or pas-sages into the cylinders. Did you use an air compressor with good nozzle to blow every pas-sage clear? Are all jets, clean and in properly (low speed air mixture jet adjusted properly? )?
What did you set the mixture screw at (from lightly closed)?
Did you remove the needle valve seat when cleaning carb?

Post back what you find out. And answer these questions. Good luck.

The fuel is getting to the bowl and I used a good air compressor nozzle and yes the jets are clean and what's the mixture screw and needle valve seat ?

The mixture screw controls the air flow mixing with the amount of fuel flowing through the carb when idling. If open to much the motor will run too lean, if not open enough motor will run rich and plug(s) will load up, may fowl out?

The needle valve seat is the brass seat the needle valve slides into -pushed up/pulled down - by the float in the bowl, this controls the amount of fuel in the float bowl for the motor to run on at variable rpms.

Good luck, post back if need, when able.
