  • Control Box/Unit Noise (Whirring)

Hi All, I am hoping someone can help me. I recently purchased a 2003 DF140 (40hrs) and have started hearing a loud whirring noise coming from the forward control box/unit. It is a lot louder in higher rev range (4000-5000) and is louder when in gear. When running at idle, you can hear it very faintly. I have pulled the whole box apart to try and diagnose the problem, however, I have had no luck. I don't believe it is electrical, and it sounds too fast to be a vibration. I believe it may be coming from the gear cables, however, I don't know what would be causing it.

Any assistance would be much appreciated!

    Noise

    Hi Benjamin27,
you will see from earlier posts I had exactly the same with my DF90. Never officially diagnosed it but I think I know what it is. I got a stethoscope on mine whilst running and I am convinced that it is vibration running through the cables/linkages either where the cables touch the hull or from the engine itself. Although annoying it doesnt do it every time and seems to be worse at the end of a days fishing not at the start although I put that down to the fact that when I first go out I am not thinking about it (concentrating more on where I am going, tides etc). If you find anything else please let me know.

Are you sure that it is not an electrical interference noise coming through the warning buzzer (the one that beeps) when the key is turned to the "on" position?

That is the only thing i can think of, and it would make sense that it becomes louder with more engine revs? Perhaps trace the wiring for the warning buzzer and see if you can find a bad connection or damage to the wiring harness it connects to? Perhaps ypu could try disconnecting that buzzer and see if the noise goes away?

Other than that, ive got nothing for you.... Good luck, and do let us know if you find the cause and have success sorting it out.

        Control Box/Unit Noise (Whirring)

Hi Weymouth1 and Moonlighter, thanks for your replies and suggestions.
I don't think it is an electrical interference, it sounds more mechanical. I am with you Weymouth1, I have taken the box apart and also believe it might be vibrations running through the cables, glad to hear that was your conclusion also. I will check all of the electrical connections to rule these out as the cause. If/when I determine what the cause is I will post back. In the meantime, I'm glad to hear it is most likely something pretty harmless.

Weymouth1, do you still have the DF90 and still have the same issue?

            Noise

Took the boat out today - engine not started for 4 months, fired up first click went out 5 miles to fishing grounds fished at anchor all day then came back engine didn't miss a beat but "whirring" noise all journey from control box, me and my mate listened to it and we are both convinced it's engine vibration resonating through the cables.
