  • 2011 dt40 overheat

Just yesterday i was out on the water and my motor cut out overheated. Got towed back to the ramp took thermostat out done some tests and looks like it has stuck shut will not open in boiling water test also took the lower leg of to inspect water pump before i got to cheching impellor. There is a thick oil sludge on top of the waterpump housing. Im thinking the head gasket has blown also to make this happen. So before i go any further i thought i would get peoples thoughts on hear cheers every1.

Check the gear oil in lower unit to see if clean, or milky (contaminated by water). This oil looks like gear oil.

Post back what you find out.

Gear oil isnt milky i just check it looked new. I replaced head gasket thermostat and water pump impellor now its up and running fine. But still dont know where this sludge has come from.

For a 2011 motor, this does look odd.
The drive shaft looks a little discolored, as though it is getting hot, and the exhaust port (open section behind water pump housing) still looks almost new (not sooty -blackish). If this sludge is related to burned 2 stroke oil, then I'm wondering how it is getting to the drive shaft & water pump chamber? Where it should be going into the exhaust chamber and out through the prop?
I don't see any type of corrosion at 4-5 years old in this pic?
I'm at a loss without looking into the midsection.

Glad you're back running again, post back if any other problems occur. Next time lower unit is off take a couple pics looking up into midsection.

          Good luck.

Thanks for the input maye im thinking it may be some drive shaft seal from the gear box or something not too sure.

The gear box is the lower unit. If you have had the lower unit in the water, and run the motor for enough time to heat the gear case oil, it will expand, but when that oil cools down (idling but still submerged), it will contract, if seals are leaking water gets in. If this happens your oil should turn a milky color. Also, if you overfill the gear case it will force oil out when it warms up.

              Good luck.
