  • Thread sealant when fixing galvanic issue on DF140

Got the steel plug out of my 2005 DF 140, that causes the galvanic corrosion issue. Had to clean up a few of the Aluminum threads after removing the plug. Now ready to install the replacement plug I bought on eBay, what do I put on the threads to help seal them? I was thinking red locktight but with the heat in that area, not sure if that is going to work. Any suggestion on what to put on the threads of the new plug to help seal and keep the plug in place?

I used Evinrude/Johnson gasket compound. I would think any outboard gasket compound should work fine. Coat all threads and the sealing surface.

      Teflon tape

I used Teflon tape on my 07, in 08. Pulled power head last month for separate issue. Here is pic of aluminum plug after 7 plus years.

Is that a picture of the inside of the engine holder? If so the corrosion right around the hole must be from when the steel plug was causing corrosion. It is interesting how close it was to the steel plug.

          Yep engine holder

Yes, engine holder. Those were salt crystals, I suppose. They brushed off clean. Though I went ahead and put some high strength metal epoxy over it. I didn't realize the pic quality was poor on first photo until after I had epoxied the plug, as seen in 2nd photo.
