  • 07 DF250 Oil Everywhere

Ran out to the canyons fishing yesterday, trolled all day, ran back in 2 hours about 4700 RPMs the entire way. About a mile from the inlet, I get a low oil warning on the starboard motor. It was late and dark so I didn't want to mess with it until I got to the dock. Shut it down and limped the last mile on the one engine. Get to the ramp and there is oil coming down the lower part of the motor. Trailered it home late last night and looked at it this morning.

There is oil all over the front mostly starboard side of the engine behind the fuse box area. Dipstick shows basically no oil. I checked before we launched yesterday AM and it was perfect. I am really hoping this isn't major but haven't had a chance to get in there and really look yet. Are there any hoses or anything that may have come disconnected that would allow the oil to evacuate the engine?

First place to check will be the oil filter. A careful close inspection may be required.

Ive heard of a couple that have split, and also, if you are using after-market filters, they may not seat down properly and have been known to blow loose/off under sustained high speed running, resulting in all the oil getting pumped out.

So check the filter carefully. A tiny pin hole can lose an amazing amount of oil under high pressure.

Good luck, let us know how you go.

well, I am happier than a pig in shit right now. Put some oil back in the engine and started it up and oil is flying out a small pinhole crack in the oil filter. Kind of mad that an oil filter that was replaced only 3 months ago would be bad, but happy that it wasn't something major. Good Call Moonlighter.

Glad that's all if was. Big relief! And a good reminder to carry some spare oil on board!

Was it a genuine Suzuki marine filter? I'd doubt it, the ones we've heard of with this issue have mainly been after market ones. But if it was, then some feedback to your dealer would be a good idea.

Otherwise, if it was aftermarket, then I'd be going back to a OEM version!

It actually was OEM Suzuki. I just replaced both engines filters with new Suzuki OEM filters and have spares onboard with extra oil. It was actually not a pinhole, but a very small crack. Very weird.
