need some help! 1982 DT140

I been in the process of restoring an older boat. I purchased a running 1982 DT140, I have the original remote control for it but it is in terrible shape.
My question is? how to I get a newer control box to work and is it possible to do this.. I am not real educated on outboard motors.

Can you post a pic of control you have. What kind of control are you trying to replace it with?

If you're buying new controls, tell them what motor you're using it on, and ask them if it has extra wires you don't need, what to do with those wires? The throttle and shift cables shouldn't be a problem.

I have the white one if that helps, I will take pics this weekend, but its missing parts and someone cut some wires, so I felt the best way would be to start over,
I was thinking about getting a universal style and mounting the key switch on to the dash.

If yous is a side mount control, the parts list shows a couple versions, with & w/o switch that would match your motor. Also, can take that part # for the complete control as-sy, google that # and description. You might run across a good condition used one just like yours? With switch, keys, and all included?
