  • engine starting issue

I recently purchased a 2007 115hp engine and upon taking it out for the first adventure experience and issue. we put approximately 10mile on the engine and were idling in neutral when the engine shut off for no apparent reason and will not restart. it acts if if the battery is dead or no power is going to it. I tried to start it several times once it acted as if i would try to turn over and acted like the battery was dead. then i thought it may still be in gear. the previous owner said he thinks it might be the starter when it gets warm. is there a neutral safety switch that would cause the issue r could it just be the starter?

There is a neutral switch in the binnacle that prevents the engine starting if it is in gear. However this switch prevents the engine from cranking so it doesn't sound like your problem.

It could be the wiring to the dead-man switch also on the binnacle - the one that has the lanyard attached. This switch will allow the engine to be cranked but will not let it start so you could check the wiring to that switch as it may be loose or corroded. You'll have to pull the throttle binnacle apart to do this.

The other important thing to check is the white battery sub-wire. This wire should be attached to the positive terminal on your battery or the positive side of your main battery switch. It provides power to the engine's ECU, and if it is corroded or not attached properly it will cause the sorts of issues you are having.

Some dealers incorrectly attached this wire under the cowl to the positive post on the starter motor so if you can't find it near the places already mentioned look there. Make sure you check the connection plus the wire itself for continuity.

You will learn that these EfI engines are very voltage sensitive and any corrosion in the harness or related connections will cause problems, sometimes very strange ones. So with a new-to-you engine/boat, it would be well worth going over the harness from end to end to check all connections are clean and cortisone free and wiring is all in good condition. Also be sure to clean the main battery cable connections and make sure they are tight (no wing nuts in battery terminals please - use hex nuts and tighten with a spanner!)
