  • DT 55 Cooling Problems / water in gear case

Hi all - i have finally gotten the engine to run well. I installed a new to me lower unit - replaced the water pump and impeller - changed the grommet on the water tube at the lower end. The engine spits water out of the exhaust at the base of the power head, but is minimal at the pee hole. checked to make sure it is clear etc. The water that does come out of the pee hole is very hot to the touch - much hotter than the water coming out of the hub and exhaust.

any ideas? my next step is to take the tube out and check the top grommet?

i am thinking this could also be the culprit of the water in the gear oil?

    Thanks in advance

Water in the gear oil can only get into the gear case (if gear case is not cracked) at the prop shaft & bearing cap seals, or the driveshaft & bearing cap seals, or the shift rod & cap seals, or the screws for filling and venting the oil. It does not matter how many leaks in the water pump system you have, the lower unit is submerged in water anytime the foot is in the water.

I don't understand what you mean by ”the water spits out of the exhaust at the base of the powerhead”. If you have a leak at the base of the powerhead, this needs to be fixed. Any leak at the base, or at the exhaust cover plate is not good. This is probably what is causing your poor cooling pressure, and you probably are not cooling the cylinders down properly, causing the pee stream to get too hot?

You can use a small hand tire pump, you'll have to rig some way to pump a little pressure into the lower case, then look for some signs of air leaking around those areas I mentioned in the first paragraph. You may see bubbles, oil leaking, or hear air leaking. No need for allot of pressure.

Good luck. Post back what you find out.
