  • DF50 overheat light at high rpm

2005 DF50 980 hours. Starts and runs fine up to about 5000 rams , at which time rev limiter cuts in and temp light comes on. Turn off engine and restart, all warning lights off, runs normal again until 5000 rpms at which point rev limiter and overheat light come on again. Have installed new thermostat with no cure. Am currently having water pump checked even though pees good. Will also change out the temp sensor. Any other suggestions?

When was the water pump last changed? The impeller can get hard and while it pumps fine at lower revs, the higher you go the less effective it can be if it has become old and inflexible.

I would wait and see if the new impeller/pump kit sorts it before going much further.

The engine is in the shop now for 200 hour service including water pump impeller change, however I doubt that the impeller is the problem as it was changed at last 200 hour service, and the pee stream is still strong. However, since it was time, my instructions to the mechanic was to replace it and check for salt buildup/corrosion.

$1500 later. Block removed and cleaned out. Lower unit from good port engine swapped with starboard engine to check water pump effectiveness. No joy. Pee stream relatively weak with either lower units, suggesting a blockage in the mid-engine housing block? Cannot see anything visually, and have tried blowing out with high pressure air. Sensor is good. Wonderful Suzuki suggests buying a new engine!
