  • DT65 revival

I recently put into service a 1997 dt65 that was inactive for about 13 years. It had only logged about 3 hours and is essentially "NEW". I took it to the local suzuki dealer/guru and asked him to do what was necessary to get it running and basically all he did was clean the carbs, add new fuel pump diaphram, and install new spark plugs (I'm not sure why because the old ones looked new). The motor ran rough, stalled frequently, and was returned to the mechanic twice for more carb cleanings. At this point I decided to take over repairs myself as the mechanic seemed uninterested and was getting expensive. So far I have:

    1. rebuilt all 3 carbs
    2. replaced fuel tank and hose
    3. cleaned filter
    4. drained, cleaned, and refilled 2-cycle oil res.

    Next on the list includes:

    1. water pump impeller (water from the pee hole seemed extreemly hot)
    2. check over heat warning systems as neither the temp light nor the warning buzzer was activated.
    3. check thermostat

Something that has come up that I can't figure out (not even with the suzuki parts counter guy that consulted with suzuki over the phone) is why there is no "ignition timing resistor" that, according to the service manual, replaced the "idle speed adjusting switch" on "all" models after 1991. The connector is there, but no resistor. The parts diagram from suzuki only lists resistors from 1991-1994. The parts guy guessed (because no one at suzuki seemed to know) that that part may have been eliminated on the later models. Does any one know if this is true? Because it seems as though a missing resistor would reek havoc on engine timing and contribut to my rough engine performance.

    thanks so much
