  • DF2.5 winterizing - fogging oil

I'm reading Sticky Article "How to winterize", and I'm lost. It says to remove air silencer, start the motor, spray carb cleaner and then fogging oil into carb opening.

Look at the picture - silencer is a black L-shaped tube under the throttle cable, and carb is behind it:

Silencer is attached to the carb with 2 looong bolts (you can see one on the left), they go through the carb into the engine. If remove the silencer, the whole carb falls off the engine. I'm not sure that I could re-attach the carb without silencer onto those long bolts. Maybe will need to put some thick washers in place of missing silencer?

Almot - I could be wrong about this, but I don't think it's necessary to fog the carb-side of a 4-stroke outboard. The fuel-air mixture doesn't go through the crankcase or lubricate the main bearings (like in a 2-stroke). I believe you can winterize "through" the spark plugs. I have a DF60A and it's a bit of a pain to remove the spark plugs, so I just have a monthly reminder in my calendar and I run it in a reservoir until the thermostat opens. I'm relatively new to the 4-stroke game, so perhaps others will disagree?

Not just to fog into carb. That Sticky Article by Super Moderator says - carb cleaner into carb, and then fogging oil in the same holes.

Carb cleaner cleans all the soot, so spraying it into carb makes sense to me. About fogging oil you are right, it just lubricates, and can be done through the sprak plug holes.

From the horse's mouth, a long-time mechanic - the best I know - told me to put oil into spark plug hole. He said not to worry about "soot" - when you start the motor again, it will spit the soot out, if there is any.
