  • New Cables to loop or not?

I have been working on an idle problem on an old boat I recent boat and I've came to the conclusion I need a need throttle cable with the help of Solarman. I'm trying to figure out the proper cable length requirements. I have a 1984 Suzuki DT115 on 84 Procraft fish'n Ski. My current cables are red and I assume they are the original ones. I can't really reed the first six numbers but I think it reads 023077-003-0144-O. So I assume these are 12 foot cables with 10/32 threads?

I have 90 inches from the back of the control to the back of the boat and 36 inches from the outside sidewall to the middle of the boat.... so my grand total is 10' 5". I know you're supposed to add 4' and round up to the next foot, but 15' seems like way too long considering I have 12' now.

It looks like the loop is not big enough to me or I really it isn't needed at all? My Dad has the same boat with a 115 Mercury and he doesn't have his cables looped at. Below is a picture of of my Dad's boat. Seems like there is a lot less stress on the cables without the loop and I could get by with 11 foot cables. The only difference I see on the two motors is the side the cables enter the motor on.

What would you do if this was your boat, loop or no loop? Any brand you would suggest or stay away from?

Thanks for your time and input,

You have a close space for no loop. But you can try no loop using your same cables disconnect them, then re-route both with no loop. You will have to connect them back, then turn motor side to side, and raise motor as high as you might normally raise for any reason. You won't be able to tell completely, but if raising, or turning causes cable(s) to rub on the edge of boat, look for another way to route to prevent any chafing, if that means longer, or shorter it doesn't matter. Just make sure no chafing, and no binding (binding might cause throttle to speed up and/or slow down with turns, don't want any future problem.

    Good luck.
