  • Ops - put synthetic oil in :)

Small kicker DF2.5. Online manual - though 2006 - says

Use only oils which are rated SE, SF, SG, SH or SJ under the API classification system. The viscosity rating should be SAE 10W-40. If an SAE 1OW-40 motor oil is not available, select an alternative from the chart below

Sorry, the chart didn't copy from PDF, See Chart on page 5.

In a printed manual that came with motor, they've gone a little crazy. Same wording only it says "Suzuki Marine 4-cycle Engine Oil" in every line. Blah, blah. Also, they've eliminated all the viscosity choices, leaving only 10W-30 and 10W-40, and displaying a different chart that says that both 10/30 and 10/40 work the same from -4F to 1004F. Just like that.

    Long story short...
Motors from the factory come with almost no oil, as you know. The dealer shipped it with 1-quart Suzuki Motorcycle Oil 10W-40 for me to use. Mineral, not synthetic. I didn't like the "motorcycle" designation and put "25W-40 Synthetic 4-stroke Marine Oil FC-W Certified" from the nearest auto store. Good from 20F to 104F. It's hot where I am, never below 30F. Proper oil, proper choice of viscosity.
    Correct?

Another Q: is "no mixing" still a popular theory, i.e. no switching back and forth btw Synthetic and Mineral? I'm hearing this a lot, and also hearing the opposite, i.e. switch whenever you feel like. Read this.

PS: my motor likes this no-name synthetic blend. At $US 23 a gallon, - in Canada - this is darn cheap.

from your chart for warmer environments you can go to 20-50
so your choice of 20-40 is just fine
the most important factor being that it rated as a marine oil
the reason as was explained to me is that outboards operate at lower operating temps than automobile engines, and the marine grade oils are best suited for this purpose
synthetic vs regular oil is, for me a personal choice
the manual indicates regular grade oil is a sufficient lubricating oil
my opinion is synthetic was designed to be better quality but with an added cost..
with your small engine it may not be relative but with my 175 and 9 quarts it could be
    hope this helps
