I picked up a 1982 DT20 (2002 series) that had no spark. I ohmed out the coils and they came back at around 180-182 ohms each. Made a peak voltage adapter and volts were about 140v main and only 50v on the other so I suspected one coil may have been bad...or it could be the cdi.
That is when I noticed something familiar about the cdi system. It was almost identical to the old Nippondenso CDI's used on the Skidoo rotax 377 and 503 engines from the early-late 80's. In fact the secondary ignition coil is almost an exact match, and is still available aftermarket via kimpex or Dennis Kirk. The primary is almost the same, the cdi is different but very similar. So I got thinking....cdi swap. Swapped the primary high/low speed coil under the flywheel (direct bolt on, wires where a bit short), i reused the stator plate since the skidoo one is a little too big. i then plugged in the skidoo cdi and secondary coil. Popped in the spark plugs and voila!!! Nice, strong blue sparks. This skidoo system is a lost spark system, meaning it sparks both plugs twice a rotation. Gave it some gas and it started on the first pull. I'm very happy. Now to figure out the water cooling. The impeller seems to be pumping water out a hole in the leg but it doesn't seem to be making it up to the power head. Posted here to help others, the cdi for these things are ridiculously overpriced. Aftermarket cdi for 377 skidoo was around $50. Cheers
