I hooked up the battery terminals backwards.. I got a big spark at the battery and then nothing. How bad have I screwed up? Is there an idiot fuse?

Yes, there are several. Check the manual where yours are located.

you didn't give us much to go on as to what year
most engines have a fuse box under the engine cowling toward the front on the port side.
there is also an inline fuse on the "white wire" that feeds from the battery switch to the dash/ignition switch that should be checked.
