2012 DF90 3-3 Code?

I have owned a 2012 DF90 4stroke outboard for 3 years now and love it but in the past year I have been having a warning code 3-3 and the over rev light come on. Sometimes it's just a steady beep and no pause. I only get this warning during idle and it happens intermittently.

During the warnings, the RPM gauge jumps up yet the actual motor RPMs do not change. If I were to increase RPM during the warnings, the gauge increases rapidly but actual RPM is normal. Example: gauge reads 6000RPM, actual RPM roughly 1000. If I put it in neutral during the warnings, there is 2 beeps and it clears. If I bump into gear and put it a hair above idle, there's no problem.

I've taken it in to the dealer to be put on the computer and they're telling me it was a low oil pressure warning due to an improper oil filter. So after a new Suzuki Oil Filter was installed they say it's fixed! Well as soon as I put it in the water a few days later, warnings again. It does seem to be more frequent now after the dealer visit.

I've been doing research into this for months now and I can't find anything or anyone with the same kind of issue. I've read it may be trying to enter Troll mode which my motor doesn't have or maybe the neutral switch is bad.. Hopefully it's something simple. Any info is helpful.

Well if you paid the dealer for the work, I think it would go back there asap.

I paid the dealer $75 to put it on the computer, peanuts. They also kept my boat for 2 weeks and it was left in the weather. With the dealer being nearly an hour away, I would prefer to have a reasonable idea of what may be the problem so I can get my boat back ASAP.

I can understand that.

Brad, I am sorry for the inconveniences, but would let dealer know the fix didn't work, and mention the distance and discomfort of the 2 Weeks left in the weather, just to diagnose & change the filter? By phone first. In the meantime, some others here may be able to shed more light on your problem.

Well, the 3-3 code is the neutral safety switch. A continuous beep is low voltage. None of what that dealer told you makes any sense, in my opinion. Low oil pressure causes completely different reactions in the alarm system than those which you've described. With the jumpy tach and other symptoms that you've described, I would be looking at my electrical system closely. Check all the connections for corrosion and tightness, starting with the battery cables. Then proceed to all the other wires and switches.

You may have 2 different problems
the RPM guage .. I had a similar experience.. I took it to a dealer and was going to have him replace guage.. he remembered a simlar problem with another boat.. not all guages may be the same but this is what worked with mine..
on the back of the guage is a slider switch.. it is evidently used for different applications.. but a little corrision set in.. by sliding this switch a number of times the contacts cleared and the guage was back working properly, and have had no trouble with it since..
another question .. do you have a chart plotter that is NEMA compliant? if so, you maybe able to use the engine interface cable which will give you the read outs
the 3-3 code as Harper noted indicates an error with the neutral switch
I don't have a code breakdown for a 90 but this is for 150-175 but it seems Suzuki has standardized for their motors
the continous alarm --this sounds to me like when you turn ignition key to on.. before you start.. or the engine stops with the key in the on position
the low voltage and low oil pressure .. my book tells me --sounds a series of long (1.5 second) beeps..
with maybe a bad netural switch, it may have the possibliity of throwing a continous alarm situation

hi i have been reading this post and havbe juyst had a DF90A outboard come through my work shop with the same problem. The engine ran perfectly and had no fault codes. Upon further inaspection i found that someone had installed an earth to the black on the troll plug. This would activate the troll system on the outboard and have these alarms come up with no other lights on the dash. The troll wiring is a two wire plug that has colours black and white/ yellow stripe.
