  • 2003 Johnsonzuki charging issue! HELP!!!!!!!!!!

Ok so I was driving along today @ 4500 rpm with my 03 Johnson zuke 140 and suddenly the engine light and alarm goes off....I back it down and shut the motor off.

I try to refire it to see whats going on and it won't turn over.....Acts like the batterys are dead. I call tow boat Us and he shows up an hour later and we jump it and it starts.....I make the 30 min run to the ramp and the alarm is going off every so often etc. But the motor makes it to the ramp.....With barely enough battery power to trim the motor up.

So I get home and the batteries are DEAD on my meter....So I replace one battery to fire it up to flush out the saltwater....My meter reads alternator curent etc and showed nothing.....it showed no current coming out at all.

So whats my next step? Do I need to test the rectifier? Stator (magneto)? How do I test it to make sure I'm not replacing something that isn't broken?

    Thank You for your help!

The check engine light and the buzzer will come on if battery voltage drops below nine volts, charge the batteries back up and start the motor and put your meter on volts dc, mate you cant check current with your meter unless you put it in series with the load you will just blow the fuse in the meter. If it is not charging it could be a fuse, the stator or the rectifier it doe's not have a magneto.

Yeah I know it as a stator I was looking at the suzuki schematics and they refer to the stater as a magneto. So I didn't know the terminology as far as suzuki goes.

I ran the motor and got 12.2 volts (when I first touched the battery it would show 8-10 volts and then stay on 12.2)

Took off Flywheel and coil looks ok....kinda old but it's 12 years old. Unfort the plugs that attach the coil to the rectifier are melted and nasty.

I also get no reading touching the white leads from the coil to each other. I read in the manual the ohms should read at least .16.....mine read .00

So I guess I will end up replacing both the coil and the rectifier. Anodes etc.
