  • DT150 smokes on first plane

Hello, I have a 2001 DT150 EFI that runs great.
The issue I have is the first startup of the day / trip.
Motor starts good, smokes a little, idles out the channel ok then when I go to get it on plane it smokes bad, the nose points up and it sputters, then she gets up and goes on plane after a few seconds. I start and stop this motor several times afterwards while fishing and it never does this, it gets right up on plane. Any ideas?

This I haven't heard before. And it only does this once, each time you launch the boat?

Any chance the oil pump might be leaking slowly past the pump during trailer Storeage, into the oil supply tube, but sits in tube, then slight smoke at start up, until first time pushing down on throttle, which also increases oil pump pushing normal amount, plus the extra oil that leaked past pump into tube before going into engine, all at one time? Then the rest of day is normal because leak-by is very slow?

They might have a rebuild kit for those pumps. Seems someone took there's apart cleaned and replaced a few o rings. Been awhile. Might check your manual?

All I can offer. good luck.

      Solarman,
Thanks for the reply. Yes, it runs perfect the rest of the day, jumps right up on plane every time.
I think you may be onto something with the oil as I have noticed small amounts of oil in the bottom of the cowl cover area on an otherwise perfectly dry motor.

        dt150, smokes on first plane

Glad you can relate to what my mind was thinking.
I hope it can lead you to a solution. These oil pumps are critical to these 2 cycle motors, so if it is giving problems, you can't afford to take chances. If you repair the pump, it won't hurt to run a pre-mix of 100-1, until you're certain your repairs are good, and marking your tank, to insure, your repaired pump is pulling oil from tank again. Yes, your motor may smoke a bit, but as soon as pump is working properly, it should go back to normal, when pre-mix is over.

Good luck, post us an update when able.
