  • oil change

Hi all, first time user. I changed the oil in my 2006 175 today, i used caltex magnitec 10-40. will this oil be ok.

Never heard of it. Are you somewhere outside the USA? Is this motor new to you? If not, what have you used in the past? Is it a marine oil? Mineral or synthetic? Suzuki's own branded oil is a synthetic/mineral blend. I prefer to use full synthetic, personally. The viscosity index is as prescribed by Suzuki, that's about all I can say about it.

I'm not sure to whom are you addressing your question, but the Suzuki specified oil is a 4 stroke motor oil, with a viscosity rating of 10W40. Gearcase takes a 90 wt gear oil. There are a lot of brands, and many that produce a motor oil specified for marine applications. Personally, I use Amsoil products; 10W-40 Synthetic Formula 4-Stroke Marine Oil, and Universal Synthetic Marine Gear Lube.

looking online at caltex magnitec 10-40
yes this is a synthetic 10w-40 motor oil
however there is no reference relating to using it in outboard motors
there are specific motor oils that are designed to be used in outboards where the engine temps run significantly lower than in your car
you should find a marine motor oil

Yeah, lots of Aussie forums discussing Magnatec, but most of them refer to Castrol, with an occasional mention of Caltex. But can't find a single reference to it being a synth, even on Castrol's website. It's apparently newly introduced in the US. Also the threads I read weren't impressed with it. None of them referred specifically to marine engine use.

thanks everyone for your info. It was actually castrol magnatec. sorry..
I think i'll play it safe and dump it, and go more traditional. And yes i'm in Australia not USA. Thanks again everyone.

Well, before you dump it, Dave, why not wait for Moonlighter to check out the thread. He's in Australia, as are several others on the forum, and they can give you some good recommendations for oil available in your part of the world.. Welcome aboard.

I am replying to the foot oil , a lot of ppl say just to use 90 weight gear oil and it is fine , but this my first Suzuki big motor , I use to have a dt65 and I was in love with it , but I had captain choice over in Lexington sc to take care of all service issues, found out they don't work on that brand at all ,

Dave, I think it will be fine.

Until Suzuki came out with their semi-synth marine oil, my local Suzuki guy in Brisbane recommended Mobil S1000 10W40, or possibly 15W40, I can't recall for sure. That is what my engine had in it for the first couple of years. It wasn't a marine oil as such, and went just fine. Any good quality 4 stroke oil will be fine, IMO.

The Suzuki semi-synth oil is made by Motul for Suzuki. Seems like good stuff. That's what mine gets now.
                    Cheers
