  • Suzuki DF175 wont start

Hi, My 2013 motors only have 15 hours on them. My shifter is a bit stiff so when I was shifting to neutral it accidentally went into reverse a bit and it stopped the motor. Since then my motors wont start. Battery fully charged all connections are tight on the battery. the motor cranks over ok and there is spark at the plugs. I have checked all the fuses including the yellow 15 amp at the controls, checked the linkage setting with a multimeter to make sure its in neutral. The motor also has lots of fuel going to the motor. The kill switch was switched from 1 motor to the other and the other motor started.I cannot find the white wire people on the blog are talking about. The white wire comes from where. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks

df175, 2013, one motor not starting

I believe the white, or gray wire you're talking about, supplies power to the switch, and gauges, and should be off the battery, or battery switch if multiple batteries. But if the motor starter is turning the motor over, and have spark to the plugs, then that would say the kill switch and white/gray wire should be ok. Sounds like a timing, or fuel related issue. Do you hear the high pressure fuel pump when the key is turned on, before starting? I might think a shift position sensor, or crank position sensor, or possibly the iac valve could be causing the problems. The shifting problem (stiffness) should be corrected as well, shouldn't have to force it.
If it is a 2013, model, should still have warranty, take your problems to the dealer, let them handle it, don't want to cause problems with warranty if still covered. They'll plug it up to the computer to find the problem, but tell them the problem you're having with shifting.
    Good luck, keep us posted.

I assume that when you attempted to shift to neutral and went into reverse, the engine was at idle at the time. That being the case, I don't think the inadvertent shift into reverse comes into play as a causative factor to your no-start situation. The motor should not have stalled just because you shifted to reverse.

So.....there must be another problem there....I don't believe the white wire is involved either. I would expect something in the battery/electrical system on the boat itself, since you say that you cannot start your motors (plural). Also hard to explain why switching the kill switch would cure the start problem on the motor to which it was switched, when it apparently didn't work on the motor where it was originally installed. Boats usually do have fuses installed by the boat manufacturer that aren't part of the Suzuki wiring scheme, but will prevent power to the motor. So you might have some more inspecting to do on the boat's wiring. Something might have inadvertently shorted to ground, a wire came loose, etc, etc.

Also, seriously consider what Solarman said about warranty. If it is a fault in the motor(s), it would be advisable to take a new unit back to your dealer for a look see. That goes for the boat itself, too, if it's also new.

And lastly, if you plan to troubleshoot problems, perform your own periodic maintenance, or fix things yourself, get a manual. Even with advice from folks on this forum, you must have the manual to do any of these things yourself. The desire to do some of your own work is commendable....you learn a lot about your boat, and the more familiar you are with it and all the systems, the better off you'll be. So look over all the wiring, then look again. My gut says it's going to turn out to be something simple. Just may take awhile to find it. But if you eventually have to take it back to the dealer, then make sure you thoroughly understand what they do to fix the problem (which one would hope that they manage to do).

I know it's a bit late but thanks for replying to my engine starting problem.
The problem was that I had water in my fuel and the motor would not start. It was puzzling because it happened at the same time as when I shifted the motor into reverse.

Doesnt the 2013 have the water alarm that goes off before it causes problems?

I second Harpers comment about letting us know what you found. Much appreciated. Too often folks ask questions and receive advice (both good and sometimes questionable) and we never hear if they've remedied their problem. All problems solved help this forum!
              Thanks,
              Bill
