Using the muffs with the motor running long enough to get to operating temp, with the t-stat open is the preferred method. Some folks prefer the type of muff that has the hose connection on the metal bracket, that feeds the water to the water intakes on both sides of the unit, but I don't think it matters much, since if you remove the intake covers, you see that the intakes are common to each other ... you can see right through form one side to the other. Just make sure you get a large enough muff that fits over the entire intake on each side. If you ever use the upper flush ports to flush the motor, make sure that you do NOT run the motor while flushing in this manner. By the way, I love Winchester Bay. Used to live on the N. Umpqua just downstream from Glide.
