  • Brand new Impeller. Won't pump water. HELP PLEASE

Hi guys. gotta brand new impellar and installed it on a suzuki dt55. first it pumped water good but the water got pretty hot to the point it was uncomfortable to hold your hand there. so then i decided to take it to a buddy down the road that tinkers with small motors to see if he knew what was wrong. We took the themostat right out and ran it without, still got hot. then we took the bottom end off, looked at the impellar everything looked fine put it back together and now doesnt pump water at all.
ive taken it back apart put a bit of grease in with the impellar (very small amount) enough to just slightly coat inside the housing. put it back up and still nothing. I blew water through the copper tube while the lower unit was off and i get water coming out the tell tale i also shot some water in the thermostat and seemed to have good flow. I also had the muffs on the lower unit while it was off and had flow.

any Idea what it could be.

I should add that i just installed the top end of a used engine that didn't come with the lower unit and used the one from my old engine which i was having the same problem with. hope that helps.

Are you sure you bent the vanes in the right direction as you reinstalled the impeller?

hey guys, just a friendly bump. Is it possible the bottom leg could not get enough flow like it didn poor out when i had turned the muffs on more or less just trickled and thats with the leg off. well im off to buy a used leg to morrow unless somebody tells me theres something wrong with both motors that they would do the exact same thing

I would suggest if you have not already is to get your hands on a service manual
just from what you describe if you were having problem with the lower unit to start with and are still having a problem
there is either something not connecting up or lining up correctly a gasket or O ring missing or an obstruction not allowing water to flow from the impeller to the upper motor housing
in my book there is a water tube that runs from the impeller housing through the mid unit with grommets on each end suggests checking for obstructions cracks corrision
the pump itself is pretty simple.. a plate .. impeller ,, housing and gasket so unless somehow you got a wrong impeller that should be hard to not put back correctly
my 175 has a water pressure valve maybe double check you motor for one
needs to be clean and free salt and corrision etc..
let me know what you find
        art..

          Hi there g-craft....

I tried to answer you early this morning, but that's another story....

Are you sure that you turned the impeller vanes in the right direction as you reinstalled? On my DF150, you have to turn the driveshaft clockwise while installing the pump case to bend the impeller vanes in the correct direction. I'm sure most outboards have the same requirement. It won't pump if the vanes are all catawampus.

Thanks Art the impellar is the correct one for sure! starting to wonder if im missing the copper tube when putting the lower unit up there seems to be some resistant on the top end where the tube goes into the motr and i don't think its sitting proper. I screwed around all day trying to get it right with no luck i've cleaned all the debris out almost seems the tube is a touch to long. the guy i bought the engine from actually has a lower unit with no prop so i think im going to buy that lower unit tomorrow and see what happens. Its cheap enough its worth a try.

The little rubber bushings on each end of the water tube in good shape?

Yes they are and so is the tube. I'm gonna get that other lower unit tomorrow. get a wire brush of some sort to clean out where the tube goes into the power head a bit better. i'll post tomorrow evening let you know how it goes
