  • 2002 200hp - cyl #6 no compression

    I have a chance to buy a 2002 Suzuki 200hp for $800.00
Its coming from a marine mechanic that says he got it in on trade and says #6 has no compression and claims the one hole can be fixed.
Any thoughts on it being worst then that?
Is there anyone out there that can give me some ideas on how much to rebuild this puppy in parts and labor?

    Thanks in advance

I was told that holes in the head are not fixable even though they can be fixed for a few weeks.

he explained the casted metal is different then the welded metal so they heat and cool differently which makes it a 100% certainty that the weld will crack over time and leak or worse, fall into the cylinder while running.

if the head is bad find out if you can get another head before you buy

that said he could sell the lower unit alone for $800 I would think so it might be worth it just to strip it for parts and turn a little profit. you might make $1,000 off of all the parts if its in good shape.

I just parted out a 2002 DF40 with a bad head having a hole in it and I got $2,500 selling off the parts so far and I still haven't sold the short block yet.

a working lower unit in good condition is worth $500 minimum and the power trim unit and ECM unit is worth another $500 each plus the short block is going to have good value as well. just price things at 25% of new cost and they sell quickly.

Thanks for the words of wisdom. I dont really have the time to tear down and part out but like you said I can get my money out of it.

The mechanic said something about there were no alarms or warnings going off and that it did run, just no compression in #6

well like I said, I wouldn't try fixing a hole in the head but see if you can locate a good used head for it (new prices would give you a heart attack then double it to pay the shop labor to put all the valves in it and properly mic all the cam lifter shims, lap and seat them. so new heads are out of the question unless its paid for by warranty lol)

what makles this a good deal or a money pit is all about if you can source a replacement head for that side. if you can it sounds like a good deal with one scary detail to keep in mind, will the other head soon fail in a similar manner since it would likely have the same level of corrosion in it.

if you were family I would say buy it only if you already know where you can get (a complete set of both sides) used heads from another motor to put on it, then get the motor, take both heads off, and see if the "good" head is eaten up with corrosion too and if it is (like I will assume) then you already have the replacement heads sourced and you can fix the motor without too much trouble and have a great deal there. I find the biggest trouble is location good used heads for outboards since that is what seams to be the most common part to fail and be unrepairible

if it iturchase them and repair it
