  • Suzuki dt-55 will not idle.

I just purchased a 1985 Monark with a Suzuki 55 engine. Craft had been setting for 14 months, so I took it to a mechanic and had the carbs professionally cleaned. We took it to the lake and it starts right up, however it idles for about 15 seconds then dies. we have gotten it upon pad a couple of times before it dies, and it runs great wide open. when checking the timing during idle, it changes from 10 deg to an undetermined deg then it dies,. We called a Suzuki dealer and he told us it was the CDI. I ordered one and put it on, however motor still does the exact same thing. Please help me figure this out. Thanks

get a factory service manual and test the coils under the flywheel, you have the main magneto coil and some other small coils up there that are for timing to tell the CDI when to fire. don't know your engine so I cant say what you have or how many but there is something there. if they are bad they can often work when cold but stop working when they warm up after a few seconds or even minutes.

this might be your issue "if" you have no more spark when the engine dies on you. running at speed may be a strong enough signal to keep it from failing until you slow down and often these "pickup coils" will go out only after you stop the engine and it suddenly has no fire anymore.

it still has fire after the timing drops out. it will start back up immediately and run for about 15 to 20 seconds then drop out again. I have searched online for a manual with no luck. do you have any idea how I can get one? I just feel like it's too good of a boat to send to the scrap yard. besides, my son and I are excited to finally own a boat. Now we just need to get it going. Thank you so much for trying to help us out!!!!

well things are pretty simple with outboards, if you have spark and gas they run. since you have spark then your problem will be gas related.

look for blocked vent on gas tank so run it with gas cap off and see, if it still acts up then its between the tank and the carbs so replace all the fuel lines and filters in that path, its well worth doing just as a routine maint. thing. if its still not working then it will be a carburetor issue so take the carb apart and soak it in cleaner then make sure all passages are clear and clean, this means taking the jets out completely not just leaving them in expecting the soak to clean it. they have tiny holes that can get gummed up and just soaking wont clean everything everywhere.

if I had to guess I think its a blocked fuel line, dirty/clogged fuel filter, or dirty carburetor not refilling with gas properly then running out of gas on you.

as for the service manual look here: https://www.google.com/search?q=suzu...oe=&gws_rd=ssl

but shop around to find a paper version not just a CD version, its a big help when you can lay the book next to the engine while your working instead of going back to the computer and if your like me you will drop or break the laptop if you bring it to the work site

that said you might also find a free PDF version of it on the internet if you spend a little time looking for it.

if you do you can click "file/ save to" to save it to your computer, then you can save it to a CD and print out just the sections you need for the job your doing to bring to the garage. and try to save a PDF version of your motors parts list manual as well since its getting old and parts info will start to be harder to find.

so your saying that the fuel can have something to do with the timing dropping out while motor is idling? I was under the impression that the fuel had no control on the timing at all.

            dt 55 coil problem

I think you should stick to checking your magneto, and other coils for timing. Many operating/ timing systems used a low speed condenser charging coil and high speed charging coil. Also pulse coils for proper firing. All of these parts will/ can cause your problem. If the timing changes so much at low speeds, then probably one of the pulse chills is bad.

              dt-55

Thank you guys, I think were on the right track now. What do we need to check for...ohms...volts...ect? All we have is an ohm meter. Do we check with motor running or not? Any help you can give me will be much appreciated! Looking forward to your reply!!!

no, sorry I missed that. if the timing is fluctuating then it must be the flywheel area. check the components with and ohm meter. what they do is as the flywheel turns there is a magnet that sends pulses through little coils telling the engine when to fire which is your timing.

as solarman suggested this is where your problem lies with the timing issues

                look here: http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Su...ETO/parts.html
parts 12, 13, and 14 are your timing coils. make sure they are securely mounted and not loose and test them with your ohm meter as well as part #1 the primary ignition coil but im sure that's ok or it wouldn't run at all. just make sure things are tight and nothing is loose under there and inspect the flywheel to be sure any magnets are secure and not loose there too.
