I went out this weekend and had a full tank of gas (50) gals. 3 guys 200 lbs a piece and normal fishing gear. On take off I hammer down on the throttle and the RPM's go to 3400, until I break over on plane and then will run 5100 WOT. Question!! On take off at WOT should the RPM's go to max? This a 19' fishmaster bay boat with 2003 DT150 with a 3 blade SS 20 Pitch Prop.

Getting up on plane slowly causes the motor to work hard through what they (machinist) call the critical speed. Your motor warks hardest trying to obtain plane than it does to maintain.
One thing about out board motors, they are designed to runn full tilt. Not that I do it because they drink gas. However, a properly maintained machine is designed to handle it under normal conditions
