DF115 piston damage

I am looking a cape horn with a 2002 DF115 that the owner said the engine quit on him last summer. He took the spark plugs out and 1 plug was "deformed" and the piston looked "messed up". i would be working on this myself. Could you guys guess at what could be wrong with it and what it would take to fix it? For some reason I'm drawn to project boats. haha

A 12 year old motor with a dinged up piston...... Sounds like a black hole to throw money at.

I guess to be fair, it wouldn't hurt to at least investigate what has happened, it could be a scrap job, but without full investigation, you just don't know!
