  • DT 25 (1986). Newbie questions

    Hi.
Having purchased a used boat and outboard recently I wanted some basic advice. Ibe searched forums and you tube etc and seen service videos etc. The engie is an 86 dt25 and I have replaced missing lift linkages etc that were not there. the previous owner said that the engine was erviced and winterized last year.

Is there anythng I should look out for on the old engine or are they in general pretty 'bombproof'?

When we have started it up in a tank or with 'ear muffs' it takes a second or 5 to start to pump water, which comes through steadily but with little pressure until you give it some throttle? Does this sound normal.

Sorry for ther 'dumb' questions but the boat was a steal and I'm hoping to get it out on the water this weekend coming and then for some harbour fishing with my boys if all goes ok.

Thanks for any help, tips or banter.

    Sam

Good maintenance is the key to any outboard, take care of it and should run good for you.
Yes it does take a few seconds before will see water out the tell-tale.

Thanks. Fixed a few niggly issues with the boat and the engine.
Little worried still. The engine runs fine with those muff ears on tight but when submerged in a large barrell of water it pees water intermittently and seems hot.
Going to dismantle the impeller housing later and see if it all looks good.
Can't get a new one for a few days and the weather here looks perfect for a first voyage. Gutted.

If it runs fine with the ears on and pressure could it just be blocked or am I wasting my time ??
