  • Dt140 not starting

Hi hope someone can help I've got a 1999 dt140 2 stroke can't get to start it turns over and there's a spark at the plugs fuel pump works when I connect it straight to a battery but it doesn't work on the engine can only find 2 fuses that come from the main feed a 5 amp and a 25 amp both were blown and have been replaced but it still won't start wondering if there's another fuse or if it's more drastic any help will be great thanks

Since no one else has replied to your help request
    first I don't know much about 2 stroke motors .... I have a 175 4-stroke
if you go to the top of the forum page to the parts look up you can find a couple of pages of wiring diagrams.. one model there are 4 in-line 10A fuses .. the other has more..
however, my basic comment - if you are getting spark it more than likely is a fuel problem.. have you tried to use starting fluid in the carb or throttle? should fire and turn over a couple of times..
here are some of the things that I would start to look at if it was mine:
is it a carb or fuel injection system.. CARBURETOR (DT140 ~MODEL:96)--parts catalog shows 4 carburetors.. each with a chamber assy and float --are they full of fuel?
fuel pump is mechanical not electrical..at least from the parts catalog
check the fuel pump from the tank to the motor
check the fuel filter.. is it full??
with a fuel injector EFI system - there is what I believe high pressure pump.that is electrical and should back track to a fuse..
Also suggest you get a service manual... it will show a complete diagram
very helpful in tracking problems down..
    have a reputable mechanic available??

Thanks for the reply I've got the diagram but think it shows some variations for different engines as I can only find the two fuses but gona have another search I think it may be a fault with the ecu as there is no power to the electic fuel pump and the wires run straight from the ecu have phoned about for one but haven't got much sence out of the places I've called can't believe how bad the customer service is

is your motor the fuel injected version?
I do have a manual at home with a wiring schematic.. will look a bit later and get back to you.. the high pressure pump, I would think, has a fuse in it someplace.. the manual will help

Just some thoughts as I look trough manual
First fuses check them again for size and if still okay
Off the battery there should be a 60A fuse
Then after that is a 30A fuse that feeds to both the ignition switch followed to the ECM relay. Output from relay splits to the fuel pump with one lead and 2nd lead to the ECM
Wire to fuel pump is terminal 37 wire color B/W and with motor off ignition switch on should give you a 12V Meter reading
For engine model 01 there are 3 inline fuses showing
            2-25A and 1-10a //for model 00 four inline 1-20A 2-25A & 1-10A
The 5A one you mentioned seems to small-- the 25A should be 1 of 2 you should have
Locate all the fuses -check for power to fuel pump
Let me know how you do

Had another look for more fuses but still can't find any more have checked the leads coming of the ecu to the fuel pump with a meter and it's dead not getting any voltage so think the ecu is not working

From the fuse block. There is an ECM relay that in turn powered the ECM
I would check the relay first the ECM is a speedy part
                Did you c
Recheck the fuses? There is no 5A fuse listed. If there is a 5A it could be blown again.

                  engine wont start

I don't think that you are providing enough information for all of these suppositions. If you have spark and fuel the engine will run. It may run poorly or run and stop. But it still should start and putter.
kindly let me know the outcome.
I did not start my DT150 2 stroke for 7 months and had a simular problem.

Have changed the 5amp fuse for a 10 amp but still no joy think there must be power to the ecu as the engine is turning over and I'm getting spark at all 4 plugs gona try and run the pump off an external source and see if it runs or not but am away till the weekend so will have another go then thanks for all the help so far hope I get it fixed soon

                      question... fuse box and relays
yes mine is different.. but fuse box has 2 relays in it and both are the exact same part number.. so in my motor the relays are interchangeable ..
does your have one or two relays.. mine are small gray (if I am remember correctly) boxes in the fuse box..
if you have two of them.. try interchanging them..
the schmantic is showing after the relay one power lead goes directly to the fuel pump.. if one of the contacts in the relay has gone bad - could be cause for no power to fuel pump..
                      Art..

My engine doesn't have a fuse box just two inline fuses have found two relays not sure if there the same but will check the two wires for the fuel pump come direct from the ecu

Right had another go at it fitted a new ecu still the same problem then I connected the fuel pump direct to the battery and the engine starts and runs when I connect it back up to the ecu it still won't start have hunted all over the engine and can't find any relays or any more fuses than the two I've already checked don't know what to check now any ideas would be great ta

Did you ever figure out this problem? I am having a similar one, but my fuel pump is working. Just not getting fuel into the cylinders
