I have a 1981 Suzuki dt85 with a jet unit on it. It starts and runs great at 5k rpm, but the overheat alarm goes off after about three minutes of running at WOT. If I shut it down to idle, the buzzer stops. Has good flow coming from the tell tale. I have tested the thermostat and it seems to be functioning properly. I've used an infrared thermometer to test the temperature at the head gasket at WOT and it reads 147°F. Any ideas on what the problem could be?

Probably needs new water pump, not pumping enough to keep cool. -
Is there any sure way to tell if the water pump is bad without replacing it?Comment

Not really, water pump should be replaced every 2 years, more often if running in shallow water.Comment

okay. i replaced the water pump and im still getting the beep. today i removed the thermostat and drove for the amount of time that it usually takes for the alarm to sound and it never did. is it okay to a run this older motor without a thermostat? or should i replace it? or even more is there possibly a different problem?Comment
