  • Dt85 jet overheating

I have a 1981 Suzuki dt85 with a jet unit on it. It starts and runs great at 5k rpm, but the overheat alarm goes off after about three minutes of running at WOT. If I shut it down to idle, the buzzer stops. Has good flow coming from the tell tale. I have tested the thermostat and it seems to be functioning properly. I've used an infrared thermometer to test the temperature at the head gasket at WOT and it reads 147°F. Any ideas on what the problem could be?

Probably needs new water pump, not pumping enough to keep cool.

Is there any sure way to tell if the water pump is bad without replacing it?

Not really, water pump should be replaced every 2 years, more often if running in shallow water.

okay. i replaced the water pump and im still getting the beep. today i removed the thermostat and drove for the amount of time that it usually takes for the alarm to sound and it never did. is it okay to a run this older motor without a thermostat? or should i replace it? or even more is there possibly a different problem?
