Adjust shift cable on DF 40

I dropped the lower unit on my DF 40 this weekend. All went OK until trying to hook up and adjust the shift cable. I adjusted the turnbuckle several times in both directions and the prop shifts both in forward and reverse but I still seem to hear noise when in reverse. Is there a methodology to adjusting the shift cable.
