Speedo sensor

I recently swapped a blown 2001 225 with the same engine in order to save the console/wiring. The blown engine had a black tube running into the lower unit for the speedo sensor/pickup. The new engine has no tube running out of the lower unit. Any way I can still use the existing speedo? Can I get into the new lower unit to install the pickup. Where is it located within the lower unit?

Can I use an external pickup like the one listed below?
