  • 2006 DF90 Temp Sensor Alarm question

Hello forum members - just signed up on the forum this morning as a new owner of a DF 90. I have taken the "new" boat out twice without issue, but yesterday ran into a problem. I had been cruising in the 4200-4500 RPM range, smooth as a baby's bottom. I then went up to the 5500 range for approximately 1 minute before a no wake zone. Upon reducing throttle, the temp light on my tach went off along with the warning beep. It continued to beep every 3-5 seconds. Powere was limited, almost muddy. I was able to tie up to another moored boat and the engine died.

After about 5 minutes of worrying and thinking, I realized that water was continuosly coming out of the tell-tale jet, so no water pump issue as far as I can tell.

I restarted the engine, limped along for a while and after no additional alarms brought it up to plane, about 3500-3700 rpm.

I am VERY new to outboards - I would appreciate any opinions - was this a heat issue, or perhaps over-revved the motor causing the alarms to go off an limit throttle?

I appreciate your help in advance,

    Ian

Probably had water inlet screens plugged up, when overheat alarm goes off best to shut engine off as soon as possible and check inlet screens on gearcase to see if plugged up. Let engine sit until cools back down, turn key to on position and if still hear alarm then engine is not cooled down enough yet. Once alarm goes off restart engine and check for water flow.

Thank you for the prompt reply Boats.net - there was a decent amount of seaweed, etc with the tide change so that sounds very possible. I appreciate the help!
