  • Ohm readings

Ok, I have found the ranges for the primary coil and lighting coil.

The pulser coil reading which is between my white/red and ground (black wire) is reading 19.20k ohms, I think this is bad since the book says this should be 70-100 ohms.

The next thing I tested was the lighting coil it says that between red and yellow wires i should get .37-.45 and I am getting .2 sometimes .3 not sure if that one is bad. I tried to zero out my meter and it will only get down to .1.

Also, the book says pulser coil and in the parts book the pictures is labled coil, primary ignition. Is this the same thing? Plus on my motor I only have the primary coil and lighting coil.

I have unplugged from the CDI and I am testing the end of the wire that is coming from the coils. I am thinking about taking the flywheel off and testing at the coils.

To answer a question, the motor ran fine one day and the very next day it ran like crap and still has. My spark is weak at times and not even there others.

Any help would be great. I left the DVM on Ohm and Auto its a fluke 117 if that helps. I think the one is bad but the other may be ok due to the fact that when testing its already showing a .1 before I hook to anything. and one time it did show .3 and that was it not .37.

    Thanks

Don't know what motor you have but peak output voltage test with a peak reading voltmeter or a DV adapter on the fluke is best test on ignition parts. Ohm readings don't help much.

      I have a 1996 DT6 2-stroke.

Spark is weak if any sometimes, what would be the purpose of the test the book is asking when performing the steps I did? Does resistance not mean anything when refering to the coils? I am confused not being rude I just don't understand the book and what I am doing I guess. I paid 100 for the motor and it ran fine the day it was given to me and the very next day it started running poorly and I am not sure what to check.

If I choke the motor and turn the throttle almost wide open I can get it to start but runs like crap and sometimes it will not start at all. Thats why I was thinking that maybe the coils or bad.

Thanks for the reply and input or suggestions is helpful.

Peak voltage will tell you if you are getting the full amount of voltage that is required for the motor to run. Ohms test will tell you if one coil is shot. You should test the ignition coil, if passes test then likely the cdi box.
