Hello I am new to the forum. I am looking at a a used 05 df 140 with supposedly only 320 hours. What are some of the things I should be aware of when looking at this used motor? I looks very clean from the pictures. How do I check the serial number to make sure it is the year that the seller is stating it is?

Check compression and cylinder leak down test. Check gearcase oil and engine oil for water or metal in oil, look for corrosion from saltwater, run engine and check for rattles and knocks.

how is that performed, newbie also with a mid 80s dt 115, seems to foul plugs and has a sputter in mid to high rpms

Thanks will do. Does the engine holder plug pretty much rot out in all of the pre 08 engines?
