  • Stops running with the cowling on

I have a 2001 Suzuki DF115 and have a new problem. When I launched it yesterday and started the engine, it fired right up, like usual, but then shut down. It sounded a little weird like it was missing and struggling to stay running. Continued to try and start the motor with no luck. Checked the fuel line, pumped the bulb and still nothing. Then, I took off the cowling and pulled the plug wires, inspecting for water and signs of issues. Nothing there. Tried starting the engine again and it fired right up, so thought the plug wires were the issue. Put the cowling back on and it died out. Took the cowling back off and it would start back up.

I read in a couple other areas, that the IAC valve or an internal exhaust leak would build up with the cowling on and shut down the engine. Before taking it to the shop, is there anything I can check to see what the issue is and maybe save a couple bucks? Thanks!

Not sure why the double post, but.......

I've had birds build nests in the intake of my DF150....now I keep a cover on it. I've had mice build nests in the heater fan plenum of my garaged truck, and have no idea how it could get into there with all the windows up, screen on the cowling, etc. Thing is, critters are tricky. Worth a check, anyway.

Computer timed out on me when I tried sending it the first time.

I thought the same thing about critters, as I've noticed a ton of baby lizards around lately. I checked the intake slots on the cowling and nothing is there.

Sounds like you have an exhaust leak and with the cowling on it's chocking out the engine. My guess is you should do a search on "engine holders". Best of luck to ya.
