  • 1988 dt40 tilt trim

Hi, new to the forum. I have a dt40 with electric tilt and trim. It appears that the manual release valve has been manipulated before. The motor works, but will not raise or lower unit. I have taken everything apart, and cleaned it. Everything was reassembled, and still can not get the unit to raise or lower.
I have not been able to find any diagrams for the valvebody to determine if there were any parts missing.

First thin is this, does anyone have a diagram on here that they could email me or is there one posted on the internet somewhere?

Second what is the propper method for priming, and filling the system?

Any help would be greatly appriciated.

To my knowledge there are no diagrams of the valve body disassembled. To prime the trim unit, just fill the reservoir run the unit up and down, periodically checking and filling the reservoir do this till all the air is out.

there is a stupid little keyway between the motor shaft and the gears, if it slips out of place you will have no connection from the pump to the gears.

seen here as part #12 http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Su...%29/parts.html

its not clear in the picture but it just sits loosely on top of the gear shaft and the motor shaft fits onto it, there is nothing to hold it in place except the opposing direction of the slots so it falls out easy if you arent very very carefull a dab of grease helps hold it in place to assemble.

to ensure it is assembled correctly you may have to lay it on a bench where gravity helps hold the keyway in place.

i would like to slap the engineer who designed it that way, i mean c'mon really you couldnt make the motor shaft a direct connection to the pump?

I agree about the design, its a little crazy. boats.net, keaker, thanks for the input! I found out today there is no diagrams that show everything.

Here is what I have learned today. I broke down, made a trip to the Suzuki Dealer, I knew something was missing in the unit, just didnt know what. I was explaining what my problem was to the parts man, and he was very knowledgable. i asked if there was anything else other than a valve screw in the assembly of the manual release valve. Of course there is, should be 3 washers with rubber.

I didnt have those, so I had to buy a 40.00 valve assembly with those three washers. I think everything is good, put everthing back together again, and bleed the system best I know how to do. By the way may not even be the correct way to do it.

Anyways I have pressure on the down stroke, it picked the rear of the boat off the trailer whill it was held with the forklift. However the tilt will not lift the motor at all. I took the line loose from the cylinder, and made double sure the fluid was reaching the cylinder, and it is.

I have no idea if the pistin assembly with its many springs or balls is stuck open and allowing bypass, but would think that if that was the case it wouldnothave the amount of down pressure it does.

It is driving me crazy! This is the first time I have worked on a hydro system on a boat, and is the only hydro system that has kicked my butt.
Anyone have anymore suggestions? Trust me I will take any ideas or thoughts out there!

well i had issues with mine occassionally getting stuck at full up tilt and after replacing both trim relays didnt fix the problem i checked with bringing it to the shop but all the mechanics i talked to said it would be around $300-$400 minimum to work on it so even though the part listed as a $1700 item, i was able to buy a whole brand new power tilt and trim setup for $800 from a website i cant recall the name of but i found that price a good option rather then let them work on it only to maybe find out they still cant fix it or have the seals go bad later on needing more work.

if your outboard motor is in great shape and you plan to keep it a while then its not a bad investment to buy a new power trim unit for a bolt on and go fishing solution since it comes prefilled with fluid.

in fact i still have my old unit sitting on a shelf if anyone wanted to buy it from me, the only problem i had was it gets stuck at full up tilt "sometimes" then after hitting the down button 20 times or so it finally goes down and works fine for hours.

im asking $200 plus shipping if anyone is interested and its off of a 2002 df40 part #48000-87J14 POWER TRIM
the parts list says it fits from 1999-2010 df40's

LOL! Yeah the OB is great and I took it out today, runs like a champ, very nice! I dont think I will be spending that kind of dough yet, gonna figure out whats wrong with this on first. I will be hitting the water at high tide for awhile, but its all good.

well then ask around for a good non dealer mechanic who has a good reputation, i find its better that way since the independant guys take more time to be sure its fixed rather then only do what the service book says to do and you find its still not fixed.

the dealers just dont seam to spend enough time testing things after repairs and come and go issues seam to never get fixed the first time with them.
