  • Need Help Getting Service

I own a 2004 Suzuki DF 250 and have experienced minor to major issues with this motor for the last three summers and I am looking to find a repair center in NW central Florida who can accually fix problems with my motor instead of wanting me to pay for items that might fix the issues.

The problem started 3 years ago when I got a check engine light and developed a rough idle. I took it in to a local Suzuki dealer in Lady Lake that I found on the Suzuki website as a repair center. Being out of warranty I knew the repairs would be up to me to cover but little did I know what it would cost me down the road.....

After 2 weeks the repair center keep giving me the blow off on finding a problem and that they were "working on it" and were about the nail it down. That afternoon I drove to the shop and demanded to talk to someone about my boat. Everyone there disapeared into bathrooms, office and broom closets hoping not to have to speak to me. Little did I know what the issue was until I walked to the back and saw the entire induction system sitting in peices on the ground. I was then told by the owner that there had been a slight "explosion" that had broken the collector while they were diagnosing the engine. He stated the motor needed a new ecm and that is what had caused the backfire that blew the collector off. He assured me that the Suzuki was going to warranty this issue as the ecm was part of an older recall and they know about this issue. 3 more weeks go by and they tell me they are still waiting for parts!

4 week, 5 weeks? Now I go down there again and am told the shop is not doing so well and they cannot pay for the parts up front from Suzuki as they are on a "cash only" list with Suzuki! After a thorough run down of my documentation with the owner he tells me to come back in 3 days and the boat will be ready. I come back, its done and I enjoy 8 months of trouble free operation.......

Same issue develops the next summer with low idle and check engine. Original shop is out of business (no suprize there) and I take it to a small shop south of me. They tell me the collector on my motor is all glued back together and they will have to fix this first before they move foward. Credit to them they call Suzuki and they cover the parts. That along with some adjustments are made and they found a supect connector. Boat runs fine for the most part other than a low idle at warm up. Use boat for 9 months and start having issues at mid range power. Here is a video clip to see what is happening: Suzuki DF250 mid-range issues - YouTube

Now I take it back to the last repair center that worked on it. They are very busy and only are able to do a leak down test in 2 weeks of having it. The leakdown on the rings was fine but I had a stuck exaust valve on one of the cyclinders. I decided to take the boat back home as I was considering selling the boat or repowering.

A couple of weeks go by and I spend a weekend decarboning the engine hoping to solve the stuck valve issue. Problem solved on the valve but engine still acting up under power. I now take it to a local Suzuki service center near the house as they stated they were slow and had time to take a look at it. A week later on Friday they tell me they will work on it first thing Monday....... Tuesday call....no word.....Thursday call..... Not sure what the problem is and "we don't git too many of these v6 motors in here" but we are still working on it.

Today they are telling my wife they don't have parts to swap out and try..... IE " We Don't Have a F&%$ing a clue what is wrong with your motor."

So now what? Suzuki is giving them a long laundry list of expensive proceedures to try as the ecm won't reset and won't go into IAC set mode. And even if it did I'm not quite sure it will address anything other than the idle. The main issue still is how the engine is stumbling and cutting out under power. My calls to Suzuki are falling onto deaf ears as the motor is not under warranty and I can't afford the 18k to repower.

Does anyone know of a repair center that can handle complex issues?

Should Suzuki help me out with this one as one of their own sponsered repair facilities fubared the motor from the git go?

I love this motor but why can't Suzuki get some qualified people to fix these things?

Any help, advice or contact #s to someone who could would be greatly appreciated. And if any Suzuki factory reps see this, please send me an email or pm as attempts to contact people at your company to help seems to fall on polite, but deaf ears.

Update: Most recent authorized Suzuki repair center has thrown in the towel and had me come pick up my boat. They had no excuse other than recommending another dealer 60+ miles away. After keeping my boat almost 3 weeks........ nothing... just a bill for $75 and a repair order with a bunch of unreadable scribble. I wanted to talk to the mechanic but the entire staff hid from me and wouldn't even come out to help me hook up my boat.

It gets even worst.... When I get home I put on the ear muffs and fire it up and the motor runs even worst than when I dropped it off. I pulled the cowl and see that both throttle stops have been messed with and the factory yellow paint seal was broken on both throttle bodies! For those of you in the know, these settings are made at the factory and even the most inexperienced techs know not to touch these as if the seal is broke Suzuki says they need to be replaced........ I'm sure when I call this morning the claim will be that no one touched these and I am SOL as I cannot prove it. I just don't understand how Suzuki authorized service centers listed on the company website can keep screwing up my motor. What would be done if my engine was still under warranty????

So now what? I have gotten some great advice from Martin on what could be the problem and recommendations from others to shops 250 miles away..... but is that my only alternative??? So many people have twisted screws on this motor I'm not sure how many problems I have now and the worst part is I still don't know any relatively local shop that I trust could fix it. I know it is not going to be cheap, I'm prepared for that. I just need to know who to take it to....... Shouldn't Suzuki be able to make this happen? I know it's out of warranty but that's OK....... I just want this thing fixed by someone who is qualified to fix it! If there is a Suzuki rep out there that could help me out please contact me at kmoose35@yahoo.com or PM me as I could sure use some assistance.

I am not sure where you are located, however suzuki should have an updated list of authorized service departments.

The dealer that just gave up is on Suzuki's updated list along with all but one of the other authorized service centers I've been to.

I am still of the oppinion that Suzuki outboard are the most reliable outboards on the market. But there in lies the problem. So very few have issues that not many of the service centers have experience fixing them. The problem are unique.

Another issue I have had is that all of the service centers I have been to have contacted there company reps for assistance. After doing compression, leakdown and fuel pressure tests they are advised to start changing out expensive components in an attempt to remedy the issue by process of elimination. This of course is to be done at the owners expence as the motor is out of warranty.

I don't want to end up like this guy:http://miami.craigslist.org/mdc/boa/2583350482.html

I am certainly not here to beat Suzuki up or their dealers. I love these motors and want to love mine again. I just need some solid advice from someone.

Update: Well, I have talked to many on a different forum and have found my issues with service centers are more common than I thought. The good news is I was able to talk with owners who were able to recommend a repair center capable of handling any issue with our motors and specializes in troubleshooting difficult problems with the big V6 series. He took an ample amount of time talking to me on the phone and assured me not to worry about what anyone else has screwed up.....He can fix it. I am cautously optimistic at this time and am making the 2 hour drag this afternoon to get to his shop.

There is a member that works for Suzuki, a tech with member named Talklessridemore. You should be able to look him up on the member list. He has made extensive posts on the 250. He will have useful information.
Contact him, I am certain he will be glad to help.

                    Update

Service Update: Boat has been delivered to Precision Marine in Largo Florida. From the minute I pulled up I knew I was at the right place. No fancy show room, just a well organized shop and yard filled with big performance offshore boats with multi engine v6 Zukes getting service and or repairs. Robert (Owner) was very reassuring and convinced me there was nothing on my low hour motor that could not be rectified regardless of who had be turning screws or replacing parts on it. He let me know up front that he would not be contacting me until they absolutely knew what the issues where and what it will take and how much to fix it. Right now time is not an issue with me that exceeds my desire to get the repairs done right.

I really feel I am going down the right road with the right people but I will continue to update as I receive news.

The motor has had the 2 ecm replacements and the collector replaced due to a tech juggling the key prior to the ecm replacement. Most of the codes have been low voltage, one overheat, and 14 iac codes. The iac has been throwing codes ever since the throtle stops got screwed with from the first time it was serviced.

I also have one of the center cylinders with low compression due to an issue with an exaust valve. Could be carbon, could be tight, could be bent. Not sure which but carbon build up is a common issue with that. Robert did'nt seem to concerned with that as the engine passed a leak down test.

One thing he did notice was the bottom main oil seal was seeping down the drive shaft. Not allot, but it was something we may have to address.

Update #2: Robert just called to let me know where they are at. First, compression is good across the board!! De-carboning with ring free did the trick on the open exaust valve.

Next, the iac valve is shot and probably has been for some time. Engine idling perfectly now! Hurray!

No problem is showing up on the stand with the lower rpm stumbling. They will problably water test it next week if they cannot get it to act up on the stand.

Update: Robert at Precision Marine gave me a call this morning to let me know they are not seeing any more issues to address at this time. She fires up and runs on the stand perfectly with no codes or alarm. He is relatively confident the IAC valve was the culprit all the time and would heat up and get worst as the motor brought up to operating temp.

To make sure, he wants me to come down and water test the boat with him to make sure. It's an awesome feeling to know you have found a great repair shop!
