Default suzuki df 40 tach needed for diagnostic?

I have a 2003 DF 40 with no tach. A service guy is telling me the audible alarm is not enough to tell me problem codes and that I need to buy a tach. Anyone know if this is true. I am getting a single beep every 4 seconds until something warms up then it stops.

It might be the oil change reminder. You can reset it:
Key on, pull the safety lanyard knob out 3 times in 7 seconds and it will reset
